vascoda is a registered non-for-profit making association with 42 members at present.
vascoda’s office is located at TIB/UB Hanover.
What is vascoda’s intention?
vascoda provides access to scientific information of all disciplines. vascoda started as a project supported by the German Research Foundation and the Federal Ministery of Education and Research. Direct and integrated access to information from any location is one example of vascoda’s central services.
For this purpose the vascoda portal was built up as internet portal for scientific information at http://www.vascoda.de. It offers interdisciplinary and expert searches and easy to use reliable scientific information such as full texts. The vascoda portal is a gateway to a considerable number of specialized virtual libraries and subject specific portals of high quality. Detailed Collection Level Descriptions give an orientation on vascoda’s services and the subject specific portals.
In the future vascoda will put an even stronger focus on the integration of vascoda services into local library services.
The vascoda association provides its members with technical support in maintenance and extension of their respective portals. Additionally, the association aims at coordinating its members’ activities and thus takes account of the growing importance of interdisciplinary networks.
How is the association organized?
vascoda’s five-member managing committee is elected by the general meeting. The managing committee is supported by the scientific advisory board and the coordinating committee. The members of the coordinating committee are also elected by the general meeting. The speakers of vascoda’s working groups (focussing on marketing, metadata content, quality management, operation e.g.) and of the subject working groups act as the coordinating committee’s advisors. One of the tasks of the vascoda office at the TIB/UB Hanover is to coordinate the activities of all vascoda committees and working groups.
What are the tasks of the vascoda office?
The vascoda office is in charge of all coordinating and administrative questions concerning the association. It contributes to the strategic planning and makes proposals for the future concept or other current issues.
The vascoda office mediates between partial interests and the interests of the joint portal. It assists the association’s members and their respective subject portals with advice on technical issues and matters with regard to content. Through its coordinating capacity it allows to take advantage of synergies.
Other major tasks of the vascoda office are internal and external communication, marketing and public relations as well as product development. In all questions with regard to product development the vascoda office cooperates closely with the NRW Online Utility and Library Service Centre (hbz) which operates the vascoda portal technically. Furthermore, the vascoda office coordinates the „vascoda 2010“ project financially supported by the German Research Foundation and acts as the association’s contact for national and international cooperation.
