Project Description
The aim of the Virtual Library of Chemistry, chemistry II project is the development of concepts and tools to actively support users in the acquisition, indexing and linking of collections of documents in accordance with individual criteria; this can then lead to the creation of personalised knowledge spaces for chemistry.
The Virtual Library of Chemistry II is the continuation of a project funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), the ‘virtual specialised library, chemistry I’, which is a Chem.de chemistry information and knowledge platform module.
The Chem.de chemistry portal is jointly operated by the TIB (German National Library of Science and Technology) Hannover, the FIZ (Chemistry Information Centre) Berlin and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh - German Chemical Society).
The Virtual Library of Chemistry II will dedicate itself to the following tasks:
- The indexing and linking of data inventories using information extraction methods (inter alia chemistry OCR).
- The classification and structuring of chemistry information through the setting-up of taxonomies and ontologies
- Extended search and browsing functions such as the chemical structure search and result development, as well as navigating search options (faceted search)
- The creation of personalised knowledge spaces through the combination of enriched search results and the application of concepts from the Scientific Web 2.0.
The modules developed in the Virtual Library of Chemistry II will be presented on the Chem.de chemistry platform.
The modules from the information and knowledge portal, Chemie Chem.de, comprise an extended service to complement the GetInfo – the TIB’s specialised portal for technology and science in collaboration with FIZ CHEMIE, FIZ Technik and FIZ Karlsruhe.
