The TIB has taken a decisive step in the direction of digital preservation
The German National Library of Science & Technology (TIB) has assumed responsibility for the digital preservation and availability of textual and non-textual materials.
This is why concepts for securing resources, allowing for existing experience and theoretical approaches, are being developed jointly with its partner libraries, ZB MED and ZBW, within the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information (Goportis). An important prerequisite has been fulfilled with the decision to use a professional archiving system which the TIB will set up and oversee.
Today, producers and users of scientific materials place justified demands in respect of integrity, authenticity, reliability and citability. The TIB wants to take on this challenge with trustworthy and reliable digital preservation and a high quality assurance. The safeguarding of publication rights, long-term availability, the enrichment with bibliographical and technical metadata as well as the professional search for, and digital presentation of, the data are important aspects of this.
The Director of the TIB, Uwe Rosemann says: “There is no universal strategy for the archiving of materials. A modification of the conventional process, which is only designed for textual media, is insufficient. It is important to consider the prevailing conditions during the creation of digital materials as well as the demands on processing but, in particular, also the users’ demands for the provision and availability of the materials. The implementation of an appropriate system is a precondition for this. The signing-up of Ex Libris as a service provider partner and the decision to use the Rosetta product have not only prepared the way for a successful collection and preservation of digital materials, but also mean that we have progressed a good deal within the framework of our joint Goportis strategy”.
