DOI Registration Agency
In 2005, the TIB became a non-commercial DOI registration agency for research data sets from the fields of technology/science and medicine. Additionally, the TIB also facilitates the registration of any kind of scientific contents resulting from publicly funded research in Europe.
In this case, registration is always carried out in co-operation with so-called "publication agents", institutions that are also responsible for quality assurance and for maintaining and storing the contents.
What is meant by a DOI name?
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a persistent identifier, which is used to cite and link to electronic resources (texts, but research data or other contents). Updated, structured metadata is assigned to the document using the DOI name.
A DOI differs from other reference systems commonly used on the Internet, such as the URL, since it is permanently linked to the object as an entity, not just to the place in which the object is located.
The DOI name provides direct identification of an entity, i.e. not just of an attribute of the object (an address is merely an attribute of the document, which can be changed and which can then no longer be used to identify the object).
What does a DOI name look like?
The DOI name consists of a unique, alphanumeric character sequence, which is divided into two parts, a prefix and a suffix.
For example,
10.1594/WDCC/CCSRNIES_SRES_B2
is a complete DOI name. It is composed of:
10.1594, the prefix, which consists of the DOI designation (10) and a number (1594 in this example). In this case, the number 1594 indicates that the object is a research data set. The suffix WDCC/CCSRNIES_SRES_B2 identifies the specific digital object.
The prefix is assigned by the DOI agency. The suffix is assigned by the publication agent, i.e. the institution that is responsible for the contents.
What does DOI resolution mean?
As a rule, DOI resolution redirects the user from a DOI name to the URL where the registered object can be accessed.
"What the DOI name identifies" and "what the DOI resolves" are two different concepts: it is possible that a DOI may not refer directly to the identified entity, but instead (at the publication agent's request) to information connected to the object.
DOI resolution is facilitated by the Handle System technology developed by CNRI.
To resolve a DOI name, simply enter the text string dx.doi.org followed by the DOI name into the address bar of any browser.
For example, to resolve the DOI name 10.1594/WDCC/CCSRNIES_SRES_B2, enter the following in your browser: http://dx.doi.org/10.1594/WDCC/CCSRNIES_SRES_B2
Alternatively, you can also use our proxy server service.
How do I begin the process of registering DOI names?
To register DOI names in co-operation with the TIB, an institution submits an application to the TIB to be a publication agent. A publication agent is responsible for storing the contents it registers with the TIB. The agent is also responsible for quality assurance, maintenance and the generation of metadata. DOI registration can easily be embedded in the publication agent's workflow.
With regard to cost, a publication agent is required to pay an annual membership fee of EUR 150.
The TIB saves the metadata and enables all registered contents to be searched via a database.
