East Asian Technical Literature

The East Asia Department, one of the two regionally orientated departments of TIB, was established as a separate unit at the beginning of the 1980ies, in response to the increasing interest of academia, research and industry in the scientific and technological developments of the Far East. Hence, it is concerned with all kinds of publications and other information media originating in those countries, as far as they fall within this library's range of subject areas, ie pertain to technology, the basic, applied, and engineering sciences. Asian technical literature translated into Western languages, or from the start published in English, is also covered; but the department's primary concern are publications in the original languages and scripts, that is mainly in Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

Holdings

The East Asia Collection is intended to make available such a range of material from the Far East as to provide an overview of the technological and scientific developments in that region, but also to allow more detailed, specialized information.

Therefore the East Asia Department's holdings essentially consist of periodical literature, ie journals and publication series of scientific and technical associations, reports of university and research institutes, conference papers, etc. Monographs which to a lesser degree reflect the latest trends and developments, are restricted to selected scientific book series, specialist dictionaries, and other tools.
Presently around 4000 current Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Southeast Asian serials are taken, covering all fields of the basic and applied sciences.

How to use the collection

The holdings of the East Asia collection are integrated in GetInfo in romanised form. Items will be found by using the standard search methods.

Transcriptions
Transcriptions, or romanisation, of the vernacular East Asian scripts follow the modern international standards, ie for Japanese the Hepburn System is used, for Chinese the Hanyu-Pinyin System (references to the older Wade-Giles System are given, where appropriate), and for Korean the McCune-Reischauer System.
