DRM
Digital Rights Management -Technology
To avoid legal disputes concerning document delivery it is of significant importance for the TIB to conclude contractual agreements with publishers and copyright holders. According to our recent agreements with publishers, electronic delivery is allowed, if the TIB utilizes Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology encrypting the copies of articles.
DRM is a technology that enables publishers and copyright owners to control the access to copyrighted content, to regulate usage, further processing and distribution of digital data and it opens up new ways of charging licence fees.
Step 1: The document will be encrypted by a special software
Step 2: Based on the users profile the range of usage rights will be
determined and stored on a special permission server.
Step 3: With a plug-in-programme to the Adobe Reader the client can open
the encoded document and use it according to the conceded rights.
Required customer data remain on the local permission server at the TIB and may not be transmitted to third parties.
DRM utilized by the TIB allows
- electronic delivery to one PC using one user account
- to open and view the document without limitation for 30 days
- to print the document twice
DRM also regulates the use of the document as follows:
- The delivery of a DRM-protected document will be announced by a separate e-mail.
- While you open the document you have to be online.
- If the document has been opened once, it is bound to the machine (PC) and the user account.
- If the documents has been opened once, it is not possible to forward it to another user nor to any other PC even when using the licence-holder's account.
- If the document has been opened once, it will not be possible to use the remaining rights on another PC.
- If the document has not been opened, it is possible to forward the e-mail containing the document attachment to another user within your institution/organization.
- The print-out of the document will be provided by a watermark, containing the name of the client.
The TIB utilizes FileOpen WebPublisher provided by FileOpenSystems.
To receive DRM delivery, you need an Adobe Reader plug-in. There are plug-ins for the different operating systems, see http://plugin.fileopen.com/plugininstallpage.html.
The installation of the plug-in is free of charge.
Alternately
- click on the sample document. If the plug-in has not been installed yet, an error message will appear, leading you directly to the FileOpenSystems Web site with the installation instructions.
or
- click directly on http://plugin.fileopen.com/plugininstallpage.html and follow the instructions.
Please click again on the sample document to verity if the plug-in is working. If the installation failed, you probably don't have the permission to install plug-ins generally. Please contact your IT department resp. administrator to check this. Please note the plug-in is working only when you're connected to the Internet. DRM encrypted documents can be opened only while you are connected to the Web. Further questions? Please find here our DRM FAQ list or contact our Customer Service:
